The preview looks interesting, and the reviews are overwhelmingly positive, but the same was true of Gravity. I was eager to see Garvity but hated it.

I hope Damon is better than Clooney and Bullock.

This is what gives me pause about seeing it. There were such raving reviews about Gravity but I thought it was very pedestrian when I saw it.

For those who have seen both - is this one similar at all to Gravity other than the whole "space" thing?

Not at all similar to Gravity in my opinion. Very different tone.

The Martian is like Castaway mixed with Apollo 13, but lighthearted and funny.

Gravity was simply mesmerizing to me. I really got sucked into it and felt the isolation of space.

Gravity does a better job of making you feel what space may be like. The Martian does a better job of making you think "damn, that's a kickass movie",

Gravity completely ignored orbital mechanics and physics in general. The entire movie was impossible.

Whereas in The Martian, making the orbital mechanics work is a huge part of the story and largely realistic. The book glosses over the science on a few things, but for the most part it's all possible with today's technology.
