Tell him F off and do what you ask him to fix. If not, you'll take your car elsewhere where they do this for free (lots of places do it these days). He doesn't have some magic diagnostic reader back there that a common person can't get ahold of.

Just look up the price online and compare. O-Reilly or Autozone probably carries the part. Go buy it yourself and tell them to put it in for you. If they give you some crazy labor charge, then look up a video on how to replace it and see how involved it is. If it takes someone on youtube 10 minutes to replace, then don't pay the guy $200 in labor.

I just don't understand what it has to do with the alternator/battery

Wife picked it up and paid for it already, so it is probably a lost cause. Just want to be knowledgeable for next time
