This! I smoke all the time on mine without the smokenator, just use two fire bricks to stack coals on one side and put meat on the opposite side. Works great.

I use the snake method (above) to smoke and it works like a charm. If I'm smoking wings I'll just run the snake vertically down the grill and load my wings up on each side of the line since it doesn't take as long to smoke the wings.
