re: UPDATED with video: We have our first insane targeting call of the year (auburn vs JSU)

I'm not a fan of that guy being ejected, but by the letter of the law, that was targeting. If it is targeting, the penalty is ejection. There is no gray area for minor targeting. If it's targeting, you're out. It sucks and there should be more room for players like this one to stay in the game.
quote:
Risk of a foul is high with one or more of these:
Launch—a player leaving his feet to attack an opponent by an upward and forward thrust of the body to make contact in the head or neck area
A crouch followed by an upward and forward thrust to attack with contact at the head or neck area—even though one or both feet are still on the ground
Leading with helmet, forearm, fist, hand or elbow to attack with contact at the head or neck area
Lowering the head before attacking by initiating contact with the crown of the helmet

2nd worst rule in college football behind delaying a game for a lightning strike 10 miles away in a storm that is headed in the opposite direction.

The OP needs to be updated because USF just lost a player to an even worse call.

USF and FSU game just had another pretty bad one. Late hit on qb but no way it was targeting.

was just a worse call in FSU game

Wow that's a bad call.
The targeting and subsequent ejection in the FSU game (starting FS on Special Teams play) was a legit call though.

The FSU call was legit? What the hell are you smoking? He hit the guy with a shoulder into the chest. That call and the rule are both ridiculous and are destroying the defensive part of football.

JSUs QB might be the greatest slider of all time
He does that thing so quick that auburn is hurting themselves trying not to get another targeting call

There have been two in the FSU game. The first was good, the second was awful. Tackled with his head up in the chest. It was probably late, and the QB was defenseless by rule, but it didn't meet any other criterion.

I'd rather see them err on the side of caution for a few years until the message is received, because you know that there are some safeties who are trying to behead the WRs.
However, I think that if a QB gets out of the pocket and starts running around, his special spoken and unspoken rules should go out the window and he should be treated like a RB.

Looks like the right call to me
QB going to the ground? Check
Used shoulder to make contact? Check
Shoulder hit head or neck area? Check
Is it a close call? Foul
quote:
Rule 9-1-4: Targeting and initiating contact to head or neck area of a defenseless player. No player shall target and initiate contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, forearm, fist, elbow or shoulder. When in question, it is a foul.
WHEN TARGETING OCCURS
Ninety-eight percent of target fouls occur on four types of plays:
1. Hits on receivers.
2. Roughing the passer penalties.
3. Hits to the ball carrier, either the quarterback or a runner, in one of two positions, upright or going to the ground LINK

I don't care if it follows the rule by the letter. The point is that it's a terrible rule and it needs changing

I hate this QB shite too.
I'm a QB. No wait. I'm really a RB. I'm going to run around like a madman. You can't catch me. Oh, wait. I'm not a RB anymore because I'm sliding. IF YOU TOUCH ME NOW YOU WILL BE KICKED OUT OF THE GAME!

My goodness is that a rough call even if you are going by the letter of the law. The QB basically dropped to the ground as the DB was going for a wrap up tackle. I don't think the impact strike of the 2 helmets colliding could have left a scuff mark on either helmet.

Nah. You called the penalty unbelievable, and I'm pretty sure a penalty that follows the rule perfectly is believable.

To me, if the defender commits first to the tackle, he shouldn't be responsible for the QB movin. After the fact.
I'm a reasonable person tho

Question: Is the QB the only player who can do this an not be hit? Could a RB/Wr slide at the last minute and not be hit?
