No more than "people of color" (since anywhere on the spectrum from swarthy to tan to pink to albino is a "color" apparently).

But they are the common parlance. Just as negro was (and still is in some places) common parlance back then.

Then that's not a valid reason to prefer one over the other. People here have a problem with African American yet have no problem with Asian American despite the fact that Asia is a huge continent from turkey and the Middle East on one side and Japan and the phillipines in the other and everything in between.
