I grew up watching up horror movies and The Serpent and the Rainbow is the only one that ever actually scared me. I still think its one of his more underrated movies.

I think that's my favorite of his. And that's bizarre because it's basically a schlocky desecration of an incredible non-fiction book that at one point Peter Weir (The Truman Show, Master and Commander) was going to direct.

But taken on its own merits, it's an excellent horror movie with creative ideas and classic moments. "I wanna hear you scream!" Bill Pullman gets his scrotum impaled in that film. There aren't many directors who have that on their resume.

Also even though it's got a lot of wonky stuff in it, I've always preferred "New Nightmare" to "Scream," and it remained my favorite meta-horror until "The Cabin in the Woods."

He'll always be legendary for "A Nightmare on Elm Street."
