No the ms river will not just pull you under water. The main danger on the river is boat traffic and the wakes they throw capsizing smaller vessels. There are also a lot of navigational hazards for boats because the water levels are so variable and if you're not in the channel you can easily run aground or into a jetty, log, etc. The other danger for swimmers is that the current can pull you away from land much like a riptide, and if you're not a strong swimmer you will get exhausted if you try to fight it.
