Horses off the track are not good for first time horse owners or inexperienced riders. They are young and have been trained for one thing their whole life. After some retraining and time off the track, sure, but don't get one right off the track.
Great advice. My sister just bought a four year old off the track (but unraced) who is the exception to the rule - he'll go anywhere, is calm, and is not herdbound. I can ride him away from a group of horses and he's fine when a group of horses runs off. He's definitely a keeper.
