My daughter has been riding for 4 years doing hunter/jumper. Loves it. She's had a few falls and foot stepped on. One fall caused a minor fracture in her hand. She was more pissed that she had to wait a few weeks to ride again 
She never rides without a helmet.
I worry sometimes, but realize she could get hurt playing softball or any other sports activity. We don't own a horse, but live next door to Farr Park in BR. They offer lessons in English and Western and you can use their horses.
We recently leased a horse during the summer. Every damn day she begs for us to buy one......
