My daughter has been riding for 5 yrs or so. I really like her doing so, it's great exercise, and they learn a lot about horses. She is jumping about 3.5' at this time, and she has had a few spills, nothing broken, or injuries.
It's not cheap at all, but overall it's a great experience.

My sister rode english for several years with only one scary moment, no injuries. Saw a couple, but nothing too terrible. But her trainer was very conservative especially with the younger kids.
I had to sit through so many shows and lessons I eventually started riding western to pass the time.
