One has a 4x4 and wishes he had a 4x2. The other has a 4x2. Most of the deer hunting will be sherburn, and a couple trips up to north LA. When taking my buddy's 4x4 bike in sherburn, we never put it in 4wd. Thats w two of us on it. We never got bogged in my other friend's 4x2 on the way to the duck blind.
Well it sounds like you may be fine with a 4x2. In my opinion, it depends on your personal preference and what type of ATV you have in mind. Using a new foot-shift Rancher as an example; the 4x2 is $4,597 and the 4x4 is $5,297. Personally, I would pay the $700 difference, because you would most likely get the $700 back if you decided to sell. Now the one case that I could see make sence is to purchase a Recon which is a 4x2 for $3,647. If I were to buy a 4x2, the Recon is the way I would go. It is smaller than a 4x2 Rancher and weighs about 140 lbs. less, which is a lot when bogged down without a winch.

Update: went look at the Hondas today. Think I'm going with the Recon. The Rancher 420s are so damn bulky. The Recon is big enough for two people to ride, and small enough that, if I get it bogged, I can literally pick up the back end and unstick it. I know a lot of you will prolly say I made the wrong choice, but it boils down to it being enough bike for what I need. Levee roads, and reserve roads. Plus I would need a trailer for the Rancher because I drive a crewmax with a short bed. The Recon will fit better. All in all, I feel like the Recon is better suited for what I will be using it for.
