Malzahn took a 1st year starting QB (Newton) and directed an offense that won the NC. He also took a 1st year starting QB who was previously a DB (Marshall) and played in the NC game. Last year AU went 8-4, but it wasn't all Marshall's fault. He had 20 TDs passing to 7 Ints. He also scored 11 TDs on the ground. Now they bring in a guy who has limited game experience, but in the one game he did start last season he performed pretty damn well against one of the SEC's "up and coming teams" this season, Arkansas. Johnson may not be turn out to be a great QB, but history tells us that Malzahn is going to get good play out of his QB and that they are going to score points. Defense is their biggest question mark

Too bad Johnson isn't a JUCO QB.

On the other hand, 5 out of the last 6 years LSU has struggled with QB play. Every year we hear Les say "next year is going to be different" when it comes to the passing game. Yet, recent history has shown that LSU's weak link year after year has been its passing game. Maybe (hopefully) that changes this season, but why should anyone EXPECT that to be the case?

Quarterback play was fine in '09, it was the running game (aka OL) that was absolutely awful. 2011, we didn't throw for many yards because we had several short fields, but we completed 65% of our throws with 20:5 TD/INT and had one of the top redzone offenses in CFB. 2012 was pretty bad the first half of the year, but Mett rebounded strongly in the last four games of the season, passing for over 2500 yards. 2013 was 2013.
