My wife is a teacher. They use these things a lot but they have not given her one yet so we are going to buy one. I really dont know much about them. I found some refurbished ones but i guess i just really need to know what is the main thing to get in it. For instance here are 2 options tell me which one do you think is better for the price.
macbook pro 13 in 2.3GHz Core i5 for 699 or
macbook air 13 in 1.7 GHz core i5 for 599 or
macbook pro 15 in 2.53 Ghz core 2 duo for 649
Thanks

Of those three choices...
macbook pro 13 in 2.3GHz Core i5 for 699
Also, do you have any other specs?

I'd go with either of these. I have a 2011 13" Air and it's the best computer I've ever owned. Right now I have 10 apps running, 15 safari tabs open, 8 different desktops and am having no hiccups.
ETA: if the pro doesn't have a SSD I wouldn't get it. Also I know some women like the 11" Air more because it can fit in a purse, FYI.

Thanks or the help. I really know nothing about them, just trying to help her. What is the differences in an air and a pro. Also is the 2.3GHz to 1.7 GHz a bigger deal or the Core i5 to Core 2 duo and bigger deal ? The one I am leaning toward is a 2011 also.

the Core i5 to Core 2 Duo is a bigger deal IMO. The i5 is better.
Air is thinner and lighter than the Pro. It also comes with an SSD (fast, no moving parts) where the $699 Pro has a spinning hard disc (slower, worse battery life). But the Pro has a more powerful processor (which may not be needed).
the Air you're looking at getting is the same one I have I'm pretty sure.

I would probably go with the 13in macbook pro. Since you can add more ram and change out the hard drive if you're inclined to do so.

If you really want a Macbook don't go stock. My last two (one for work, other is personal) I've customized through Apple and have had zero issues with either running pretty much all Adobe programs and anything else there is. Granted, I've spent $2,500+ on both of them individually which definitely sucks.
Before that the normal Macbook Pro I used slowed down significantly after about a year-and-a-half from what I can only assume was not having the correct specs to continue running all the Adobe stuff at multiple times.
If she isn't going to be using a lot of photo, video editing, then I would say avoid the Mac Pro completely because of price, unless that of course isn't a factor at all. YOLO.
ETA: Where are you finding Macpro's for less than a grand?

Also get the pro if she has to load up anything from cds or dvds. Air doesn't have an optical drive

Memory is important. Since you are looking at refurbished, it is probably not an issue, but Apple has started saudering the memory to the mother board. Which means that you will not be able to upgrade the memory in the future. Keep this in mind in case you do look at new models. Since she is a teacher have you looked at the Apple education pricing that they are running now?
