If these meeting were after curfew, I don't see a real issue. But I was one of the cub scout dads with a flask of rum labeled "soap", so I may be biased.

I see a problem; you have to supervise this.

My thing is you are in charge of other people's children. Even though the meetings were "after hours", something could happen. A child could have a seizure, a fight could break out, an allergic reaction, etc. You just don't know. There are too many "ifs". If an emergency were to happen, you don't want to be slightly buzzed. Heck, personally, I would want to avoid the appearance of impropriety. I wouldn't want someone to question my judgment in an emergency, even if my judgment is still sound after a couple of drinks.

While I understand your reasoning, see Sabi's point below:

It's one thing to assume risk when you are on vacation with your family. However, when you're in charge of other people's children AND breaking the clearly defined rules there is an issue. Sure, you likely weren't losing your inhibitions, or creating an unsafe situation. However, you've been entrusted with the wellbeing of someone else's children.
Granted, from your example, overnight Cub Scout events require an adult guardian be present for each boy. Nevertheless, what if one of the boys had tried to put out a fire with your "soap?" Stranger things have happened at Scout camp.

I was one of those cub scout leaders with bottles of whiskey labeled "Buffalo Trace." But then again: (i) pretty much all of the kids dad's were sharing and (ii) I would not have bitched if they kicked me out on account of drinking when I wasn't supposed to be.
