I sure as shite do not recommend you go in that area at night.

You can't go in by yourself anymore. You have to be with a registered tour guide.

eta: For a sandwich when you're walking around.. You have to go to Central Grocery on Decatur and get a muffaletta and a Barg's Root Beer.. Just because. And go to Cafe du Monde and have coffee and beignets.. Sit a while and take in the atmosphere. Walk down to the French Market and have a seat at Latrobe park. Take your time, don't rush through your visit. Walk around Jackson Square, go up on the levee and walk the Mississippi River. Have a drink at Tujaque's. Enjoy your time with your lady. New Orleans is a very romantic town and the really fun stuff is not on Bourbon Street.

but its in the french quarter.

FQ defender here, btw. When i entertain out of town friends, this is the area they like the most. FQ, then to the marigny. It has the most things to do, best sights, interesting people, music, etc. Bourbon Street isnt the only gem of the FQ.

Dip out into uptown to have dinner, give a small tour. See the oak trees and houses on St Charles, or whatever other people consider entertaining in uptown for out of towners. Shopping on Magazine? freaking lame. The neighborhood vibe is cool for locals, but it's not very interesting for out of towners. Maybe older people you entertain. Im in my early 30s.
