Keep in mind though that a number of those larger races are comprised of individuals who run casually and are more interested in the social aspect and the accompanying bumper sticker rather than the actual challenge.

If you took around 500 healthy males between the ages of 18-30 and had them partake in a serious endurance regiment (e.g. running and cross-training 4+ days each week, maintaining a healthy diet, and participating in at least a twelve week training program) I guarantee that individuals running seven-minute splits would be in the bottom half of such a group.
