Chromebooks typically have 1 each USB 2 and 3 ports. I've connected external hard drives, thumb drives, and digital cameras to mine. The Chromebook has been able to display the files and depending on the file type there may be an app available to execute them. If you just want to use the Chromebook to move files from the external device to a Cloud it has no issue and is pretty darn quick.
