I know this doesn't really help your situation, but I'm 99% sure there is NO law against this in Texas. I think it's a myth they tell you not to do because obviously it isn't exactly safe. But I don't necessarily think it's illegal.

Well you are 99% wrong. I was in the car with my mother who got a ticket from a Bellaire PD officer in Houston for changing lanes in an intersection. The left lane was left turn only and apparently my other did no catch that until in the intersection. She changed lanes to proceed straight and was written a ticket. Luckily no person or dog was shot.
