I guess it can be connected but he was under the impression it wouldn't work as they work completely separately. I guess there's really only one way to find out....

It is not ideal I guess, but you could hook up the soundbar via HDMI. Then runner speaker cord to your other two speakers inside and create a 4 channel stereo sound.
