What router would be best....

My sister needs a new router, hers is old and has to be rebooted all of the time. She has Cox internet, a Motorola Surfboard SB5101 modem and it is located in the middle of a 3000sg foot one story house. What router would be best? Should she get a new modem as well or an all-in-one? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

There is pretty much a consensus here that the ASUS RT-N66U is solid and a good buy for the money. I'd avoid the all-in-one units.
Here's a LINK to the router on Amazon. Newegg has some refurbs and open box units a little bit cheaper.

SB5101

Is there a huge advantage to the SB6141 vs the SB6121? I have cox preferred at 50 mbs download speed and just bought an SB6121...I wanted the SB6141 but they were out of stock.

Yes, the channel bonding. Consider channel bonding as lanes on a highway that can be used at the same time by traffic.
SB6121 is 4x4 (4 up, 4 down).
SB6141 is 8x4 (8 up, 4 down).
SB6183 is 16x4 (16 up, 4 down - but you'd need to live in an area that the provider supports 16 down to make use of it currently).
ETA: You said huge advantage, I won't say the advantage is huge, but it could be noticeable in experiencing the optimal speed you subscribe).

Would this only help with speed or something else? How much of a speed difference does it make?

She's best off replacing the modem and router together. As has been said, the Asus N66U is the standard recommendation here.
ETA: It could help with stability connecting from her house to Cox, but I don't know if that's a current issue.

I have the AC66U personally (I have an N66U also), but even I only have one AC device (ASUS ROG).
In the OP's case his sister is using a 7+ year old DOCSIS 2.0 4x4 cable modem. I am hesitant to think that she has AC devices or will soon.

gotcha. yea u had the n66u and it shat the bed durring the last lightning storm. i was between the ac66u and the netgear ac1900 as i said before and am trying the netgear.
I ready that my power cable could be the problem my n66u is dead. I ordered one form amazon to see if it will power back on. If so idk what im going to use it for, maybe a repeater or just sell it.
any ideas?

Btw, I do agree with you though. If someone is in need of upgrade and purchasing now, I would get:
SB6183 and AC66U. $280 or so to future proof.
The SB6141 and N66U runs around $200.

quote:If you get it working, depends on your needs. I'd run it as an Access Point (needs to be hardwired to your netgear) over using it as a repeater (just because repeaters have serious bandwidth degradation).

But if your netgear already covers your entire area with quality reception, then you don't need it and could sell it.
I kept my N66U as backup and to connect to my offline studying network - if I decide to work on CCIE.

Just upgraded from sb5101 + linksys wrt54g to a sb6141 + Asus rt-ac66u and it is night and day. Went from 5mb to 60mb with cox 50mb preferred.

Don't have ac devices but it was only $40 more for the ac unit and I read the chipset has better performance for some n technologies.
And I went with sb6141 over 6183 because if I have an Internet tier over 383 Mbit it's probably going to be gigabit fiber and I'll need a new modem anyway.

I only have one device that's capable of using the 5GHZ band, let alone AC, and dual band has been around for a long, long time. IMO AC is a waste of money at this time.
