I feel like many times women feel safe being physical because they hide behind the fact that most men won't retaliate (which they shouldn't in 99% of the situations). But the fact is that there are better ways to handle a situation without being physical and women should be held to the same standard as men in those situations. If some pathetic guy took a weak swing at a dude and the other guy knocked him the frick out, everyone would say he deserved it because you shouldn't escalate a nonviolent situation into a violent one. Being smaller or weaker shouldn't give women the right to instigate a situation with violence and I would think women who are striving for equality would feel the same way.

I said something to this effect in another thread. Basically, whoever you are you need to be smart and realize you may be on the receiving end of some wildcard guy who snaps and punches/stabs/shoots you. Women need to realize that there is a very real possibility that the same thing may happen to them that would happen to a guy in the same scenario. Any confrontation you start/escalate with a stranger is one that you could be starting with a psychotic, a gang member or someone that has not seen enough "no more" commercials.

Being smart is the best way to stay out of bad situations.

ETA: He should have been smart enough to step back from the situation if possible. She should have been smart enough not to get things escalated to where they were.
