Problems with capacity on SD cards

We have two Canon D-SLR cameras and a 1GB card and an 8GB card. I cleared off several videos we shot with the new camera a couple of weeks ago and cleared off the pictures on both cards to free up room for our vacation last week. My wife put the 1 GB card in the old camera and after taking about a dozen pics it showed memory full on the camera. My brother in law had a laptop I borrowed to see what was going on with it. Just the pics and they varied from around 3MB to 6MB. But the computer showed it only had 120MB of total space. We've used the card for years with no issues. Now all of a sudden it acts like it has no capacity. We've only used it in the cameras. And the 8GB card had maybe 150 pics on it. Same 3-6MB per pic but still couldn't take pics with them. I don't think it is an issue with the cameras but not sure. What would cause this to happen? I'm about to just order a 32GB card and trash the old ones but wanted to see if the tech board had any tips to troubleshoot in the meantime.

Did you manually delete the items off the card from a computer?
Or did you format the card in the camera?
I'd suggest option 2 if you haven't done it.

I'll try that tonight. What I have done for years is load them on the computer and hit the box to delete after import and never had issues until now.

Yeah, I'm going to order a couple. I'd just like to have these as extras. I was thinking a big 32GB card for videos only, and keep the 8GB one we have for photos in the old camera and a 32GB one for photos in the new camera. I was just trying to figure out why all of a sudden the capacity seemed to disappear.

But if you continue to use it over and over again, it will definitely wear out eventually.

The life expectancy of a USB Flash Drive can be measured by the number of write or erase cycles.

But is USB storage the same as an SD card?

It's FLASH. All flash has a lifespan.

I honestly wonder sometimes, how some people even find the tech board
