I've seen teams full of kids who are clearly way better athletes have circles passed around them by far superior technical teams.

I hear you. It's the same thing with hockey, basketball, or many other sports. It's called game sense and though alot of it is natural it can also be developed with lots and lots of hours playing and practicing. It's like basketball players in the park or hockey players on the frozen ponds. No doubt if our best athletes grew up playing nothing but soccer they would develop into the best soccer players instead of their other chosen sports.
