Yeah, I don't know if I'd only go to Missoula for a vacation. It's a cool town, but not very big and you'll probably run out of stuff to do after a couple of days. Take advice from others and drive to Glacier National Park or some of the other nearby things to see. I rode across Montana on a bus in July several years back. Was a beautiful ride. Lots of scenery and meth.

it's the second biggest city in Montana, to Billings (which sucks). The greater area is around 115k. There is plenty to do.
Bozeman is half the size and not as eclectic a town.
If the trip is in the fall, you want good low elevation hiking and fishing and good nightlife/restaurants. Football games here are awesome, too. Griz fans are nuts.
