May be a dumb question but anybody use their depth/fish finder to find shell reefs? I've always had one on the boat but mostly used it to find drop offs and know how deep of water I'm in. I got a lowrance 4hdi and it looks like yellow return on the bottom floor would indicate rock bottom? Just curious if anybody has any tips on finding reefs with their units.

Negative but they shouldn't be that hard to find without.

I wonder how much of a "step" would a shell pad come up from the sea floor?

I think I read this wrong. I'm thinking about finding oysters in the marsh.

Adjust your gain so you have a double echo for hard bottoms.

From the little I've read it seems sandy bottom like you would find on the beach will come up red with little yellow mixed in. But if you are drifting across and pass over a shelf bottom or something "rocky" then you will start to see a yellow color on the screen symbolizing the bottom surface. I know some small platforms in lakes have more of a shell base than others and some may have silted over. I'm hoping my depth finder will help me find that.
