Life on steppe changed little if at all during those thousand years. I say Mongols, Genghis khan's greatest asset was his ability to recognize talent and inspire loyalty in those talented individuals he conquered, his depth chart of capable and brilliant military officers was stacked not to mention advancement was based largely on merit. FYI the Mongol empire lasted for a few generations after his death. His grandson kublai khan was a historic "great" in his own rite
