It is very well made and directed, but it is somewhat a relic of the 70's 'everything is corrupt' school of film.

Yeah, along with the total lack of resolution or happiness, "it is what it is" ending.

A corruption story at the heart of early-modern Los Angeles was perfect for Hollywood of that era.

But the fact that it was a modern, beautifully filmed take on the classic noir genre is probably the main reason it stands out.
