Clearwater is too far away IMHO. You have to drive the length of I4 and then all the way through Tampa and clearwater to get there. Parking is scarce on the weekend.
I would suggest New Smyrna as the best family beach area that is close to Orlando.
Cocoa Beach is a dump and so is Daytona.
St Augustine/Crescent are the best but, it may be a little too far away if your the is compressed.
