Absolutely not. One of my good friends from New York was born to a very well off family, but his maternal grandmother's name (not mother's) is worth as much as his father's success. His grandfather was a USMC BGen who married a socialite. His dad used her middle name and so does he.

ETA: I meant they used them as middle names (exactly as you represented Pete's use).

Sometimes your moms name means more. I don't see why taking advantage of that is a bad thing.
