Can anyone shed some light on intel's "turbo boost technology?"

Im looking to buy a new computer and when looking at the specs, i see a computer has 2.2 ghz of processing speed with 2.7 ghz turbo boost. What is turbo boost and is it safe for a computer? Could it run a program that requires 2.4 ghz of processing speed? Thanks

quote:It's just a term they invented, and it means that for short periods of time the processor will run faster than it is rated for continuous use. Processors these days run at many different speeds, depending on workload and the power profile you are using. So, a processor rated at 2.2ghz should be able to maintain that frequency indefinitely without overheating. If the temperature and other parameters are in check, it will temporarily run at a speed up to 2.7ghz if the workload necessitates it. That's "turbo boost". And yeah, it's safe.

Cool. Thank you. Just one more question. When you say 2.4 ghz P4, what does P4 mean?

what does P4 mean?
Pentium 4, Intel's old processors that are a few generations old now. Basically anything on the market today is leaps and bounds faster than a P4, regardless of the ghz.

while that is true, the PTB still try sneaking an old pentium in a new shell for the newbies
