There are decent cops out there but I suspect even they contribute to the problem by not being willing to speak up when they see one of their fellow officers behaving badly. So the bad ones get to keep up their antics and make a bad name for all. Plus if you spend your entire day dealing with citizens who are only borderline civilized it's easy to fall into an "us vs. them" mentality.

So I think it's less of a problem with the kind of person who wants to be LEO than it is the working environment and institutional support. If I worked in NBR every day I wouldn't be a great person to deal with before long. And that is even before considering the money isn't much.

I really think it has more to do with the fact that if you're constantly dealing with the dregs of humanity it'll change you for the worse.

There are thousands of LEO's who provide building security at federal agencies and you never hear a bit of trouble about them. But they're always dealing with white-collar types who aren't posing a physical threat.
