A few closer drives that are pretty good day trips:
Hwy 7 in Arkansas
Highway 309 up to Mt. Magazine in Arkansas is a great ride.
Hwy 246 and 88 are pretty nice rides running east-west through the Ouachita's in central Arkansas.
Long Leaf Vista in Kistatchie National Forest near Gorum La.
None of these are like the other places everyone mentions, but make for a nice back country rides within a few hours of south Louisiana.
