The urgent message Jon got from the commander of the mission at Hardhome said "Dead things in the water." The wights had attacked the ships at Hardhome.
On the show there's some truth to that by showing all the abandoned ships in the background

Oh yeah, I had forgot about that. But there still wasn't an all out battle like on the show. And I don't think that any WWs appeared at Hardhome, that I can recall anyways.

Well, Hardhome had been cursed for a long time before the Wildlings took up residence there. So those wrecked ships could've been there for hundreds of years for all we know.
