So im marinating chicken in some italian dressing...think it would be ok to then use bbq sauce on it ? Or are those things to be kept separate?

Don't put sauce on it until it's done or it will burn. Cook on indirect heat then crisp he skin on higher heat. Might try an overnight brine

I like sauce on BBQ chicken...added just a few mins before you take the chix off the grill so it glazes a bit. Don't use your typical tomato BBQ sauce since you've already marinated in Ital dressing.....use a bit more dressing (fresh, not recycled marinade) and enrich it with a little brown sugar or honey, some minced garlic, a squeeze of mustard, etc. for a kind of sweet mustardy glaze.

I think it would be ok, but when I grill chicken it's usually breasts in Italian dressing no sauce. when I bbq I use a dry rub then sauce.

This assumes that burning is bad. The wife likes extremely burned chicken. I put BBQ sauce on the chicken and burn the hell out of it.
