I'm on my third Toshiba and I have been impressed by all of them. I'd probably still have my second one if it didn't meet an untimely demise by my then 3 year old son. He saw a cord hanging off the table, and like most kids would have done- he pulled it. Laptop was not happy. But I've liked all of mine and will continue to buy them.

I would say that it really depends on what you plan on using it for.
And as far as Apple laptops go, people love to hate on them and the "Apple tax" but as far as build quality goes they are second to none. I've had numerous laptops over the years but my Powerbook was by far my favorite.
