Transaction taking place 3 hours from my house. I don't have a bank there, don't know anyone there.
Fwiw, walmarks cashes checks up to $5k which is more than I need.

well, then take a cashier's check with you and go to his bank to turn it into cash...there has got to be a reasonable way to make this happen and not put either of you at risk...

Take a buddy with you, both carry. Cashiers check at walmart seems like the best option for you since you want to cold start it.
