The sliders and other specialty items are better than the donuts.

I think they are still learning how to do a donut. I really can't say I've overly enjoyed any donut I've gotten from there. Bakers dozen, tastee, KK do better donuts. District goes in the overrated pile for me
The issue with their donuts, to me at least, is they're entirely too heavy. The dough is very dense and the toppings take over the taste of the donut itself. They server what is more like mini cakes.

Salted caramel glazed doughnut from District is damn tasty.

I've been wanting to try the wedding cake and toasted coconut. Their filling/icing are great. The cake needs a little work imo.

This is the second time I have seen someone remark about the denseness of the District's doughnuts and comparing them to cake doughnuts in terms of consistency.
Again that their yeast doughnuts are nowhere close to cake doughnut thickness or heaviness. Try Mr. Ronnie's if you think otherwise.
However, I will agree that the toppings certainly dominate the taste. But isn't that the point of ordering that sort of doughnut?
If you want just fried bread with a hint of sweetness then by all means get a plain doughnut or a glazed doughnut if you prefer few frills.
I prefer variety and eccentric ingredients, so it works perfectly for me.
