He should have just taken Winterfell and took the boys as prisoners back to the Iron Islands, but it's still hard not to feel sorry for him. His fate is truly worse than death.

No..that is why he had to burn them. He killed them just to be stand-ins and to show the others in Winterfell he could not be disobeyed. Which is why he WOULD have killed the Stark children if he found them.....to show his complete control.
that is the irony of his current situation. he was drunk on power and being in control and NOW he is totally controlled.
