This is not very scientific, but watch the first Superman with Christopher Reeves. They have a few scenes with Jimmy taking pictures standing on top of the Hoover Dam. The ring is present in 1978 when the movie was filmed. The ring is larger today than 37 years ago, but not by much.
During the mid seventies, the nightly news would report on the thermal winters. Today we are warned about global warming.
