First drop that drivel, Thin Red Line was not accurate to Guadalcanal at all.

Agreed. But I appreciate what Malick was trying to do. He was trying to show the horrors of war from an existential perspective. I find that approach unique and this is why I have included it on my list.

Yeah, it was terrible. "Guadalcanal Diary" is far better.

Also, if you're looking for a James Jones treatment, "From Here To Eternity" is an outstanding film.
