The original Secret Wars is one of the single most despised comics in the entire history of Marvel. I cannot, in good conscience, recommend it to another human being to read on purpose, unless he (and it has to be a he) is 11 years old.

Secret Wars was Marvel's first big cross-over event and was popular enough to generate a sequel event (which did sucked mightily) and pushed Marvel into creating more large cross-over events over the following years. The series not only introduced the Venom sympiote (which has had enormous impact in the Spider titles over the decades) and Titania (meh) but also had Doom in one his most shining moments. It's by no means a Fall of the Mutants, but to call it "one of the single most despised comics in the entire history of Marvel" is complete bullshite.

BamSmackPow's #4 in their list of Top Marvel Events

Hell, even the thread at Comicvine doesn't seem to have anyone else who dogs it anywhere even close to what you've said

If you didn't like it, that's fine. But to toss your own conjecture out there like it's carved in stone among the rest of the readers is ridiculous.

While I agree, one of my very favorite panels is from the early pages of Secret Wars - Ultron (being Ultron) flies up to Galactus who is just trying to figure out WTF just happened, and attempts a pre-emptive strike. Galactus just drains him of all energy and Ultron collapses to the ground in a heap. Like Mike Tyson - Michael Spinks.

ETA: Found it.
