I don't want to slog through every ones collection (unless I absolutely have to). Any suggestions or tips?
Infinity Gauntlet sets the bar pretty damned high. For more multi-team fun you should check out the first Secret Wars (first appearance of the Venom symbiote, anyone?).
As others have said, the Claremont years on Uncanny XMen are not to be missed as well as the Civil War series.
Some that may have been missed are:
Avengers: The Korvac Saga
Avengers: 160-210(ish) (I think this also covers the Korvac Saga)
The Incredible Hulk: Peter David's 12-year run was pretty definitive for that character
And finally, it's not canon but certainly is fun:

The original Secret Wars is one of the single most despised comics in the entire history of Marvel. I cannot, in good conscience, recommend it to another human being to read on purpose, unless he (and it has to be a he) is 11 years old.

Those saying the only good stories from the late 70's were the X-men should read these. Great story arcs, not on the same level as Claremont, but pretty close. It's really in these issues that Perez came into his own (actually started back in the 140's). Byrne drew about 10 issues as well. If I remember correctly, these were the issues that the federal government first started to heavily regulate the Avengers. They were appointed a government liaison who hated the Avengers. Forced to limit the number of members and pretty much forced them to accept Falcon as a member due to affirmative action.
To the OP, if you like Infinity Gauntlet, I would suggest you try to find the stories from the mid 70's in which Thanos looks for and finds the Cosmic Cube. The arc jumped from title to title, but I think it was in the Avengers, Marvel Two in One and Marvel Team-Up. Excellent story line and precursor to the Gauntlet.
