I think he crossed the line when he started gathering intel on real people. Even if it was a fantasy for him, he was sharing it with people that could have been deadly serious.

It reminds me of The "To Catch A Predator" series. Tons of those guys would throw out the line "I was just kidding around" or "I wasn't going to actually have sex with her".

The minority report theory is something that we'll have to have a detailed conversation about.

That's where I thought they stretched out the "thought police" angle.

Nobody picked this guys brain and found this out. This guy expressed these things to other people in extreme detail on a billion occasions. That is more than a thought at that point.

While I agree with you. I do recognize him as "patient zero" on this topic.

Did we watch the same documentary? He wouldn't even give last names. And said no to every request at an address.

He shared photos, did he not? Reverse image search is a thing.

I just finished this and disagree.

If I was on the jury, there is no way I would vote to convict on the conspiracy charge. Dude has a disturbing fantasy and fleshed it out with great detail, but convicting him based on that is exactly policing thoughts.

As was mentioned in the piece, the police should have set up a sting. Hey Gil, meet me outside of Kimberly's house at 8pm, bring a rope. If he shows up with a rope, done. If not, the guy is just a detail-oriented weirdo.

Maybe he could be charged with some type of stalking charge since he investigated these women, kept a database, shared their pics, and then set up a meeting with one. But even that is sketchy.

I think the only reason he was charged with conspiracy to kidnap is because of the nature of his thoughts, IE rape, torture, cannibalism.

Let's say someone is really into The Godfather, constantly watches the movies, reads the book, searches all the historic mafia families, learns about what underworld business is most profitable, how to launder money. He's so detailed he writes out his list of Capo's and family structure. He shares this info with a few like minded folks in a chat room. They discuss their grand idea to create a underworld crime family, even meeting prospective members. All the while nothing really happens. Should this guy be charged with conspiracy to become a Don? GTFO.
