I can understand going after someone that falsely accused you of something serious like rape but in all honesty what good does this do to him? I mean even if he wins what's the benefit of going through the trouble and suing her

He is the defendant. This suit exists if Winston wants to move on or not, which he does. When you get sued, you reply to the accusations and also "sue" the other person through a counterclaim. It is the same case, the same trial. It can even be strategically beneficial to go on the offensive in the answer. This doesn't exist if the initial civil suit isn't started by the female accuser. The best case for Winston is if this all went away, but since it is not, this is part of the pretrial.
