You need a shoe with a hard sole, which is why many have suggested chucks. Actual weightlifting shoes will have a heel lift which will help you get depth on your squat(or catch).
This.
I used first gen New Balance Minimus for leg days.
They have a hard sole with a 0 or negative heel-toe drop.

Have really flat feet but I use special inserts. I've always just worn my regular tennis shoes. Any recommendations?
Are you a serious enough lifter that you need special weightlifting shoes?

Adidas Powerlift 2.0
Great shoes. .6 inch heel lift .... highly recommend. Makes a huge difference.

I wear my steel toe work boots. You can never be too safe.

For olympic lifting most choose between the Adidas Adipower or the Nike Romaleo
You can also use dress shoes with a wooden heel in a pinch. Chuck's, Vibram's, or barefeet are good for deadlifts.

That depends...what kind of lifting are you doing? Are you doing powerlifting or olympic weightlifting?
Do you have hip or ankle mobility issues?
Are you planning on competing?
Are you looking for practical options or something to allow you to reach your maximum potential?

Jesus Christ. Wear fricking tennis shoes or cross trainers. Are we at this point in society where we need special shoes to bench press and dumbell curls?
Tennis shoes and most cross trainers have gel inserts and are not stable in the soles. If you are lifting heavy arse weight while squatting then you want to make sure you are locked in and your body is stable.
The last thing you need is to have poor ankle stability with several hundred pounds on your back.

The only issue with those two options is that they cost +$150.

This is the route I took while I was squatting heavy.
These things kick arse. They were about $85 and are sturdy as hell.
