I was late getting into this series (about 2 seasons ago) and haven't been faithful in watching all the back episodes.
Was this past episode the first mention of Kerouac/On The Road? Because I could definitely see some fun to be had trying to view the show through that prism.

But at their core they can never be happy, even with someone so alike. That's what makes Don so destructive - he finds someone to fall head over heels for him and then he pulls the rug out from under her and moves on to the next disaster
I still wonder how things would've turned out for Don if he had chosen Faye (the psychologist in Season 4).

Pretty much. Especially from Don. Season 1 or 2 he was screwing an artist chick in the city. Too early for hippies so there were beat-nicks that visited and interacted with a drunk Don. The kids were saying don was part of the problem that "they" were greedy blah blah blah. Don snubbed them saying, "there really is no 'us'". Meaning their conspiracy is not valid.
Got close to Kerouac reference. But flipped. Don being ultimately On The Road and the kids reading that scene all stayed put.
