As for prisoners in police custody hurting themselves, I watched a guy that was handcuffed and high take off on foot, lower his head and intentionally run himself full speed into a wall. It wasn't like he was trying to get away and hit the wall while looking back. He focused on the wall from the second he took off and only lowered his head at the last second.

Would I have believed the officers story if I hadn't directly witnessed it? Hell no. But I did and gave a statement that probably kept him out of a heap of trouble.

Does that necessarily apply here? Maybe and maybe not but people do strange shite all the time. Look at the number of guys arrested for low level crimes that hang themselves in jail. No one knows what was going through his mind. Or maybe the police wrestled him down and broke his neck in the scuffle. Only a full investigation will decide based on scientific evidence and interviews. The bullshite quickie coroner determination and sudden charges by the prosecutor have me questioning if that will happen.

These anecdotes are completely irrelevant. "I knew a guy who knew a guy who _________." Seriously, who cares?
