I haven't watched this yet but plan to soon. Most of the complaints I've seen is that the show quickly abandoned the premise of him being alone or even just him and Schaal for a half season and just became a basic sitcom. That was disappointing to hear because the premise of it being just him or just the two of them for 6 or 8 eps sounded very different.

I wouldn't say it's a basic sitcom at all, very different, I mean aside from the fact that it take place in a post-apocalyptic setting, the storylines are all pretty unique (they pretty much have to be given the circumstances).
As for all the complaints about the name, it might be a little misleading, but if you get analytical with it, you can bend it to make sense. Phil lived so long thinking he was the last man on Earth and his ego may never recover from his self-absorption.
