As with everything, execution matters. I think Thor took its characters and plot seriously, while you had a character, though invested in the outcome, also realized that this whole thing was absurd. And it was. Something can be absurd and still have narrative stakes.

Also, Dennings is a more interesting character than Portman. I'm more invested in her survival and her story.
