Halliburton is just one organization in this feeding frenzy, and they made a half-million dollars per day over there.

How soon do you think they and other companies want that to end?

We defeated the Nazis and the Japanese COMBINED in four years. How anyone can still believe that we haven't been able to beat a bunch of thugs over a 14-year period (and counting) is beyond me.

Our military is neither structurally nor morally well-equipped to defeat an insurgent population. To "win" in that case we'd have to act with a kind of brutality that would hardly win friends and influence people abroad, and would be swiftly rejected at home. And what would be the point of such a victory anyway?

Sure, we could destroy IS with a ground army quickly, but the Sunni population would still be there, and the same underlying political and sectarian problems that gave rise to IS in the first place would likewise still be there, and probably worse.

The "we" you refer to during World War II was the combined might of most of the free world whose countries total resolve was focused on victory against conventional forces. So to answer you the victory came about only after around three percent of the total world population was killed and two atomic warheads detonated for good measure.
Russia sustained a loss of 30 percent of its total resources, Great Britain essentially bankrupted and the U.S. Spent roughly 300 billion 1940 dollars funding it.
So by comparison the 500 thousand a day Halliburton is pulling down is a drop in the bucket.
